IV Summer School on Statistical Physics of Complex and Small Systems
IFISC, Palma de Mallorca, Spain (8-19 September 2014)

Venue

The school will take place at the University of Balearic Islands Campus. The UIB Campus is located 7.5 km north of Palma downtown, in the middle of a scenic landscape, and quite close to the mountains in the "Serra de Tramuntana" range. Google Maps have a nice bird's-eye view of the campus

  • Lectures will be given at room 5 of the Antoni M. Alcover building (constructed recently, not appearing in the satellite photo)
  • Coffee breaks & poster sessions will take place at the IFISC basement floor.
  • Students' oral presentations will be at the IFISC seminar room.
  • Lunch will be served at the Cafetería at Campus Sport.
  • Hands On sessions will be at the computer classroom AIMO15 on the 1st floor of Mateu Orfila building.

Transport

Airport

Palma de Mallorca is very well connected with the rest of Spain and Europe (specially Germany, the UK, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia) with its international "Son Sant Joan" airport (airport code PMI), the only airport in the island of Mallorca. The airport is located 8 km east of Palma.

 

How to go from Palma Airport to the UIB campus

Bus/Metro (subway)

At the Airport take the Bus Line 1 to Plaza España (or Plaça d'Espanya; this is Palma's downtown). The stop is outside the Airport Arrivals' Hall. There is one bus every 12-15 minutes. Ticket price: 3 EUR. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver (bills larger than 20 EUR are not accepted). Line 1 bus route and schedule can be found here. From Plaza España to the UIB you can either take another bus or the metro. Bus lines 19 and 9 will take you to the campus residence. Ticket price: 1.50 EUR. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver (bills larger than 20 EUR are not accepted). On working days, line 19 has a higher frequency (every 15 minutes) (see route and schedule). On weekends only bus 9 operates (see route, schedule). Travel time from Plaza España to UIB student's residence is about 30 minutes.

You can also take the Metro (subway). Take line M1 which starts in Plaza España (marked as Estació Intermodal in ticket machines) and ends in the UIB campus. Travel time is 13 min. The Metro station and the Student's residence are located at opposite sides of the UIB campus, therefore if you take the metro you will have walk about 1Km (15 min) to get to the residence. Ticket price is 1.50 EUR. Tickets can be purchased at the ticker machines located in the station hall (bills larger than 20 EUR are not accepted). Taxi

Alternativelly you can also take a Taxi from the Airport to the UIB Students Residence. Taxis can be found just outside the Airport Arrivals Hall. The price depends on the number of suitcases and time of the day, typically between 25 and 30 euros.

 

How to go from the airport to Palma downtown

Bus

Taxis can be found also outside the Arrivals Hall. Average price to Palma downtown: 25 EUR (plus supplements for luggage, night time and Sunday rides).

 

How to go from Palma downtown to the UIB campus

Metro (subway)

This is the recommended transportation between Palma downtown and the UIB campus where the workshop will take place. Take line M1 which starts in Plaza España (marked as Estació Intermodal in ticket machines) and ends in the UIB campus. Travel time is 13 min. Ticket price is 1.50 EUR. Tickets can be purchased at the ticker machines located in the station hall (bills larger than 20 EUR are not accepted). Keep the ticket until the end, since it is needed to leave the station. Bus

Weather

The average maximum and minimum temperatures in September in Mallorca are around 28 and 17 degrees Celsius, respectively. For detailed information visit, e.g. el tiempo

The official time on the Balearic Islands is the same as on Spanish mainland, CET: During autumn-winter, GMT/UTC+1; During the spring-summer, GMT/UTC+2, following the Daylight Saving Time convention of the European Union.
